Shen Zhou is under attack from within.
Shen Zhou is under attack from beyond.
In Shen Zhou, an unrighteous Emperor sits upon the throne.
Heaven shows its displeasure.
...Strange particolored lights dance among ancient ruins after falling from the skies.
...Ancient cults dance in isolated villages, paying homage to a slumbering god who rests dead and not dead under the sea.
...On the coast, twisted villagers breed with their brothers from the depths.
...In the capitals of the Sixteen States, the Cult of the Black Fan offers aid to those who seek power.
...Huge tunnels open into the earth, seemingly worn smooth by the passage of time -- or something larger and antedeluvian.
...Fathers promise their daughters to the Black Goat in the Woods in exchange for sons who will praise their names after their death.
Outside of Shen Zhou strange emmisaries come from the West, representing the Emperor of the World.
...Constantine, who under a yellow sign conquered much of the lands of the Occident.
Now he turns his piercing, mad eyes East, and sails bearing the Yellow Sign of Constantine's master are unfurled and ships are sent to Shen Zhou, with orders to seal an alliance with the Emperor and spread tales of the great city Constantine is building, which sits on the shore of a shadowed lake...
...From the lands of the fire worshippers, tales come of a Black Pharoah, awakened from a dark sleep, and his emmisaries offer the sages of the Shen Zhou immortality.
...And in the jungles to the south and the east rumors come of diminutive cannibals, and black martial arts unknown in the Wulin and powered by the Void.
And Beyond Shen Zhou, the Celestial Bureaucracy quakes, for the Void is hungry, and the elder gods beaten into submission or lulled into slumber by Pangu reach out through cults, speak in dreams, and attract the powerful through their ancient Weapons, the Weapons of the Elder Gods.
Only the Heroes of the Wulin can master their fear and steel their minds and fists before the coming onslaught. Are these the end-times? Only You Can Ensure That They Are Not.
Inspired by the idea that wuxia and the Mythos can be combined with nearly everything separately, I have decided to combine them together. Just like in Lovecraft's time, the secrets of the universe lay open to the sages of China, but when they look across the cosmos they do not see order, but a fragile framework of logic perched across a great ineffable gulf. And in that gulf there are Things, and they are hungry...
The players are sages, courtiers and warriors who have banded together to fight off the darkness and return order to Shen Zhou. When they falter, Heaven's anger causes a shift in the Wheel of Destiny, and empires fall and the darkness' hunger comes closer to fruition. When they succeed, they succeed only briefly, because they are but men, and there enemies are shades of the eternal.
Can the heroes of the Wulin fight ancient horrors? Can the sages of Shen Zhou resist the taint of madness while they delve after forbidden lore? And can the courtiers within the courts of the Sixteen States deny the irresistable lure of power offered by the servants of the Great Old Ones.
I'm working through the rules now, but my plan is to use the current system of Passions and Inspirations as a Sanity system, invent new tainted martial arts and chthuloid weapons for the enemies of Heaven, and figure out how to make the current magic system work with the kind of powerful but inherently sanity-wracking sorcery of Lovecraft as well as purer Daoist magic.
Thoughts?
