This is, along with Age of Steam and Byzantium, a member of my holy trinity of Wallace games. Unlike the other two, this has very simple rules: on your turn you put a tile up for auction, buy a tile, start a war or pass. But under this apparently simple engine there's a very deep and complex game, full of strategic choices and tough decisions. There are several completely different ways to win and the game really rewards planing and strategic consistency. A player who doesn't commit to a path will most likely loose. But this is also a negotiation game and players are even allowed to exchange gold or influence, the 2 existing currencies. This is very true to the renaissance theme and really works gamewise! The level of negotiation present is entirely up to the group, though, and I've played games without any negotiation, where nothing was ever even offered and I've played games with a lot of offers and counter offers being made. I personally prefer the latter style of play, as I think it really makes sense and adds a lot of flavor, but I can understand that some people prefer it the other way around, because there are inherent dangers to negotiation heavy games (time constraints, ganging on one player, etc). All and all a great game, with a very rich theme and simple rules, which is unusual in a Martin Wallace game. And the rules are even relatively clear which is even more unusual!

hmocc8.0Rating after 1 play. Interesting game where there can be various routes to victory. My money oriented strategy almost paid off (came second) but it's really hard to compete against strong warlords.

Pontos Positivos: - Tudo e mais alguma coisa. Tem muita interacção, tem muita guerra, tem muito leilão, tem muito bluff, tem muito jogo sujo e tem dois dados. - O ambiente. Transpira Itália renascentista por todos os lados. - Qualidade do material. --- http://jogosdetabuleiro.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_jogosdetabuleiro_archive.html

The game is built on an extremely delicate and complex balance of options and strong points, which I am sure requires a great deal of work to master (or even come close). The marriage between theme and system is fantastic and very elegant. The only two criticisms I would make concern the rules (could be better structured and made more clear) and the graphic display of the tokens (can be quite confusing at times). File that away and you're left with a truly great, challenging and fun game.

A great game. Full of interaction, lots of strategy, excelent mechanics. It has to see the table much more often. I've played it with three players only and it doesn't work. Minimum requested 4 but it gets better with more. Once again Martin Wallace released a game that has a very unique feeling. Different strategies may be applied to achieve your goals and I've seen them work. All of them! I like when a game is full of difficult choices not only in its mechanics but also as a path to win. 28/06/08 Played with four players. I like it more and more. I don't know any strategy that could prevail everytime I play it and that's a great thing. It does make things even more difficult to me but it's a great thing for a game. It becomes different everytime I play it and usually I don't have a clue about what I am going to do before playing it. Go with the flow and do your best.
