Great one ! I don't usually like wargames... This one i like, simple enough... but deep and tense... Huge historical background, great components, cool mechanics... Some issues on luck on cards you get...

One play of the advanced rules, liked the game better than Friedrich. Overall, I think it's a very elegant game, with simple rules and very few pieces on the board compared to most wargames. It's also a nice depiction of eighteenth century war, with lots of manoeuvre to cover supply lines, while the fortress protection rules allow active defence along interior lines. The combat system is quite inovative, fast and tense, although it can be argued that it's not incredibly realistic. The balance between the three players seems to be good and allows for a more intense game than in Friedrich, avoiding the all against one problem of that game. The political system is an added twist that provides a nice break in the war making. A great game that seems to play fairly fast (took us less than three hours with three newbies, though two of us had played Friedrich before - Austria's collapse led to the end of the game at the close of the second year). Edit: second play, another collapse of Austria, with Prussia winning this time. Seems Austria in Maria may play the same delicate role as Prussia in Friedrich. Need to play as Austria to see how much of a problem this actually is.

Introductory game. Played once with three players. I think that this game has nothing but positive things. It seemed very well balanced and busy to all players. Everybody was involved in the game and everybody could have won the game which ended in the 9th turn with a French victory. It's a quick wargame. I guess it could be easily played in about 90 to 120 minutes which is quiet an achievement to a dense wargame, especially if we're talking about a three player wargame. Rules are very simple to understand, even more if players already know Friedrich because the heart of the game is almost the same with a few (even though strong) changes. The map is absolutely gorgeous! We could actually be talking about the most terrific map I've ever seen. Superb design and graphics. Also, the devision of the map with the Flanders zone is very cool and it manages very well the tactic aspects of the game by introducing some very important minor restrictions that cause a good technical feeling about what players/nations should do to balance strengths. I'm really interested in playing the full complex game because it should add a much more historical flavor. It should turn the game into a much more rich and diverse experience in many other aspects such as diplomatic matters and strategy. Played the full version. There are lots of things to think about and to learn about this game. The political version adds something really interesting in my opinion because players should know where to bet and search for new victory points. Nothing should be putted apart since every point can be a major point. I've played for the French in a major epic game of more than 5 hours and it was a hell of a game. Luck can turn things easier or not (of course). I didn't have much of luck and but I still think I could have won the game if I had played differently. The cards players have in hand represent money and power so they have to be very well managed. Can't wait to try and play the game with Austria and Prussia/Pragmatic Army. I really think this is a genius design. What a game! Played it again this time with the Prussians. Totally different feeling from the game with France. The Pragmatic Army also has a major role in the scene and I guess there's a lot to learn here.
