Considering the economic simulation and how everything works together in 1830 this is far better than just an 8. I could probably (maybe even should) rate it better than this but the ratio fun/time of play, which is by far the most important thing a game can have, is not very positive. I would like to play this game now and then, maybe a couple of times a year but I think it will be very difficult to convince my gaming friends to do it. The sad thing is that I'm sure that everybody, with a couple of games more, would like this game a lot! My gaming group is not very fancy about 18xx games and that doesn't help me playing this kind of games more often. I wish I had that possibility. The thing is that this is a very particular type of game with a unique brilliant economic engine. This engine works perfectly no matter how players play and that's why is so common to newbie players get bankrupt. This is a gamers game and without any doubt one of the greatest games of all time! |

| A Brief History of the World | soledade | Para Troca | - | I'm not sure what to think of this game. It's a game that offers a different experience from what I usually have when playing. It has some originality in the way things work together. I like the theme. It simulates a civilization game but it doesn't feel much like that because everything is constantly disapering from the map. A civilization comes and goes and there's nothing players can do to refrain that because that's exactly the way the game works. It's more playable with 3/4 players than with more because the downtime is something ridicously long and dull. Everyone plays alone (almost) and, if a player has to wait for 5 turns to play it's very very boring so I would say that 3/4 players is the only way I'll b playing this game although I admit there are more advantages in getting more players into play such as tightness in the map, more events and civilizations participating on it. The amount of armies seems to be the core aspect of this game but also the order of entrance in play for each civilization. It seemed clear that if a player changes strong from an epoch to the next he should try to play early in the game so that he can expand before someone destroys his armies. And if a player is weak, a good entrance could be in the end of the epoch so that he can prepare two turns ahead and build a secure fortress to score a lot in the next turns. it's a not a game that can be dominated by heart and that's a positive thing to say about it. It evolves a certain amount of deep strategy and tactics that I like. It balances the three aspects - tactics, strategy and luck - in a very fine way. The overrun rule can be too much powerful but it can also reduce the frustration of a bad result in a couple of dice rollings because there's no way a player can have bad luck for all the game - or is there? It's a keeper. I really have to play it again now that I understand it better but I'm not sure if this is the kind of game I would like to play more than once or twice a year. Production values are average with the components being in plastic (which I hate) and the cards being not thick enough. I understand that production costs should be reduced but since it has a cover from Peter Dennis I would also liked to see this game with components like the ones Treefrog uses in its line. A good civilization game has to have good above average components! |

Apart from the first influence track both of the remaining don't seem to work very well. I still like the game but I guess it won't be played very often unless it really works with 2 players only - that's something I have to figure out. |

It worked well although some of the cards with similar prices were way much better than others wich I guess it's normal. I've found it odd. I still think this is a good game, easy to play, difficult to master (I don't intend to master this game because I really hate having to know all cards and combos in order to play it right). A bit boring at some point. A seven is good enough for now. 03/01/09 Pushed the rate down to a five because this game is becoming obsolete after playing it not more than half a dozen times. Its hype doesn't make sense, the game is boring at some point. You could also play it without even looking at what you're doing and you may win! Final edit: And the winner is.... the player who can get 8 coins more often. It's not about building your deck or anything like it's all about getting those coins! This game has nice ideas but all in all it doesn't work for me. Plus I don't think that it deserves such a hype. PS: One of the things I hate to do is shuffling cards. A game that makes me do that all the time doesn't diserve much of my attention. |

When I first read the rules it seemed like a classic Splotter game with short simple rules and a terrific gameplay with for sure some new mechanics and also a new feeling. The theme presented itself to be in the day to day agenda and the interest in getting into it as a difficult/fun game was immense. Sadly this game turned out to be pointless in the long run since players are always competing for only a couple of VP's cards and that's really annoying. Most of the time only one (rarely) two players were competing at the same time for the same VP card and that turned out to be very frustrating. In the end, the last auction, is clearly gained by the player who had the most money. I can't figure out why this very enjoyable game in certain aspects wasn't made in a different format allowing players to dispute both gold and silver VP cards and also why is not possible to buy more that one card in the same round. Plus, it seemed very annoying the fact that a player can make trades between two companies he owns for a single buck allowing some promiscuous gameplay. The trading mechanism is the core part of the game and it's up to players to make it work. I'm not sure if I like that. I really think that a good trading mechanism should be part of the game itself and not dependable on how players do. Container has this same exact problem to me. I really want to get into the rules again to see if we missed something because there's something in this game that really doesn't appear to work at all. To much expensive for what you get. I understand that buyers should only buy Splotter games if they want to but the real truth is that the playing boards are not good enough (they weren't either in Duck Dealer). The art work is very good but components are average. I guess I won't be buying more Splotter games at this price after these last two disappointments (Duck Dealer and Greed Inc). |

I rated it a 7 just because I don't want to be unfair to the game.
I find it to be boring. You do the same thing over and over. It's just a matter of taste. There's nothing in the game that I like.
I admit that maybe I wasn't in the right mood and with the needed security on the rules to enjoy the experience.I may have to try it again in order to decide better what to think about his one. The thing is that I'm not in a hurry to try it again and that may be an issue. |

This isn't exactly a bad thing to be it's just that after all the hype I've heard I thought this was going to be a different game somehow. Not sure how different but different. Then again, this has nothing to do with the game itself which is very interesting with lots of clever available strategies. One of the good things I found is that there are always lots of solutions and they all seem good enough at some point. The way improvements work are clever designed with all players having the possibility of searching for their own strategies. The game seems to have room for everybody to try different things. The start is slow, very slow, a bit dull I must say, but after that the game can be played fast paced although it could block some players exactly because it has so many offers. Hansa Teutonica reminds me of Goa because of the improvement skills chart. Players chose to improve their abilities instead of scoring victory points in order to do better from turn to turn - have more actions, move more pieces... This decision of upgrading skills as opposed to actually score VP's is one of the most interesting things that this game has to offer. Also the skills players have at their disposal are all very valid and good to have so it turns decisions even more tense. I really have to play this game again just to make sure if I find it average or better than that. For now it's a 7. Components are generally average but the artwork of the board is awful. I like the box cover but not the board. I also don't like the way English rules are written. _______________________________________________________ Played for a second time and again with three players. Raised the rate to an 8. I don't think I'll raise the rate again in the future only because I don't find the game fun to play. It really push the right buttons on me and it's really a very challenging game but that is the end of it because the playability, its gaming feeling, it's not something that I especially enjoy. It's one of those rare situations where I like the challenge but really don't find what I'm doing very enjoyable. |

Putting this multiplayer game together is quiet an achievement. Congratulations Ed for this superb release. Played again with three players. A complete disaster as I only pulled out 1's and 2's on the dice! Played with the French and the Ottomans in a 3 player game that ended up with an easy victory of the Hapsburgs at the very beginning of the 4th turn. I didn't have any luck, something really really scary and had the feeling that playing with the Ottomans require some luck on the dice because they do actually live for battles and confrontation. As a result of this total lack of luck the Hapsburg player found himself alone in the map with no competitor in the East side giving him a real solid advantage and destroying the game balance. There are still lots of things to learn and to try such as diplomacy and also long head planning. I found myself playing in a rush trying to get keys very early in the game and forgetting that the game should last for 9 turns and not only four or five. Some huge mistakes were made. The best thing I can say about this game is that even though I didn't have any luck (any luck really!) in the end and after 5 or 6 hours of rolling bad dice and conducting my two major powers to disgrace I still had the desire of playing it! A great game! Let me just say it again, I rate it a 10! |

Everything is too tight and it gives a lot to think about. I like that in this game because it's not too much cruel. Controlling losses is the key towards the end and that's something we should learn with experience. Again this is just a preliminary rate. It could go up or down depending on how the game works in future plays. Fiddly annoying setup! This game has a very strange board. It's maybe one of the most awkward boards I've ever seen. It looks like someone's insides. Components are of very good quality as in other Treefrog line games. This one is very original, it plays very differently from other train games and it really makes sense. A solid design with new mechanics (take a look on that takeover mechanics) and a really deep strategic feeling. I must confess that I suck at it. I really can't figure out what's the best strategy to take and usually get lost at some point of the game. And that's really a challenge to me which at this point of my gaming life it's the best I can say about a game: challenging, strategic, original and fresh. I wouldn't recommend it to newbies not only because of the unappealing artwork (Peter Dennis didn't make this one as he usually does to Treefrog) but also because of the difficulty of seeing what's happening on the board, the tight auction and investment cubes and the heavy thinking. |

Simple rules, short turns, a bit of analysis paralysis but it really worth the effort. Can't wait to give it another try.
I've already played a couple of games more. It's not very relevant if you dominate the deck, as in Twilight Struggle for example, it's much more important to dominate the map. Players should always be very careful with all the positions occupied in the map because of supply. Supply really was a major issue in WWI and PoG puts this concern into a total different perspective.
The system is really easy to get into it doesn't have a colossal rulebook nor is it unplayable without experience. It's a kind of perfect introductory game for real and non-real wargamers because it can easily be played by wargame's newbies.
The map is very well designed but sometimes the countries borders are not easy to see.
Positions seem balanced, although the Allies apparently have some advantage. One of my major goals for this new year is to play a full game of PoG because until now I've only lasted a few turns.

This also means that the most important building in the game could be the 2 food per turn. |

Although I think the rules don't quite reflect the theme, I still think the game has overall been accomplished quite nicely. It requires you to have a prety good memory if you wanna be sure you want to win, or at least manage to score all your tickets. The cards are of fantastic quality, very large, good material. They even use symbols for each color for colorblind people to be able to play this game, which is a very nice touch! I have played the original game only online, but I'm tempted to say that I prefere this one over the board game, since I don't really think that the game, for what it is, justyfies the price, so I'd rather have it as an easy to carry around, cardgame. Nice one this one! |

Strategic enough with a small amount of luck. For what I've seen now luck should be prevented but I have to play a few times more, especialy with more players, to see how it works. It almost feels as if it would be better if it were to go more slowly, so you could better explore the possible strategies opened by all the cards. Lots of screw you plays, even outside of combat. Should have lots of replayability from the base game alone. First impressions: first game was over very fast, second took a bit longer as we knew the cards better. Must try the drafting rules and the other races. |
